MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Institute is not open to corporate bodies and is available only to individuals.
There are two grades of active membership:
AFFILIATE - Affiliate membership is open to anyone having an interest in Traffic Accident Investigation. Affiliate membership may not be used as a qualification.
AFFILIATE - Affiliate membership is not restricted to any particular discipline and is open to anyone having an interest in Traffic Accident Investigation.

FULL MEMBER - An Affiliate member may apply for transfer to Full Member status after not less than 2 years. Applications for transfer to Full Member are subject to scrutiny and assessment under the rules of the Institute’s Grades Assessment procedure. Full Members are entitled to use the qualification MITAI.
FULL MEMBER - An Affiliate may apply for transfer to Full Member status after having held Affiliate membership for not less than 2 years. Persons accepted as Full Members are entitled to use the qualification MITAI. See 'Rules for Grading' below in respect of qualifying procedures.
RULES FOR GRADING
1 Applicants for transfer to Full Membership must have been paid-up affiliated members of the ITAI for the previous two (2) years.
2 There must be proof of an applicant's experience in their special field for a minimum of five (5) years. Applicants must have experience in their special field involving accident investigation.
3 Soon after an application for transfer has been received, it will be advertised in 'CONTACT'. Any members who have reason to object to the applicant’s transfer are asked to advise the Grades Assessment Group Secretary in writing.
4 The appropriate fee must be included with the application.
5 Applicants must supply a portfolio with clear evidence of their CPD completed for the previous two years. (Currently the value of the CPDs should be equal to 18 hours study per year.) CPDs can be accumulated through self-motivated study, training courses, and attendance at appropriate events/lectures. ITAI and other Conferences and regional lectures/visits may attract a specified CPD value.
6 Appraisals from two (2) sponsors to be submitted with the application. The sponsors should be able to relate to at least the previous two years experience of the applicant. It is recommended that affiliates, who are potential applicants for Full Member status, should seek their Sponsors from within the Full Membership of the ITAI as early as possible. They should then keep their sponsors informed of their activities.
6a Where certificates are being produced to validate qualifications, the original certificates together with COPIES should be supplied to one of the SPONSORS who will endorse the copies and return the originals to the applicant.
7 The applicant will submit a list of ten accident investigation files with the application form.
a) None of the files must be more than five (5) years old.
b) Files should NOT be sub judice.
c) All submissions must have the approval of the owners of the file.
8 The Secretary to the Grades Assessment Team will select two files from the list and inform the applicant. The applicant must supply then supply copies of those two files, which, in addition to the applicant’s report, include all the supporting evidence that the applicant relied on in completing the form.
9 Each applicant will be required to include a 2500-word report with the submissions of their work files. The basis of the report will be to expand on their submitted work files. In particular to show their personal involvement, the AI principles used, what they learned from their investigation and what their report achieved.
10 Where the Grades Assessment Panel consider it to be necessary, it will require the applicant to be interviewed at a pre-arranged time and at a suitable location. The applicant will be responsible for his/her own expenses.
The Grades Assessment Team may vary the above conditions only in very special circumstances.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Institute is committed to a process of life long learning. There is a requirement that each Full Member completes not less than 18 hours documented CPD each year.
RETIRED MEMBERS – The Institute offers two levels of Retired Member Status:
- RETIRED STATUS For those members wishing to receive copies of Contact only the annual fee will be £20.00. This level will not entitle the member to the discounted rates offered to Institute members at events.
- RETIRED + STATUS For those members wishing to receive both Contact and Impact, together with discounted rates at events, the annual fee will be £50.00. (This package provides the same benefits as an Affiliate member).
BY TAKING RETIRED STATUS A FULL MEMBER WILL NO LONGER BE ENTITLED TO USE THE MITAI QUALIFICATION.

All membership fees are payable annually on 1 January, the Institute year is from 1st January to December.
New applicants:

At the renewal date following transfer the Full Member subscription fee will be due.

ALL FEES ARE PAYABLE TO "I.T.A.I."
For applications made after 1st October, the full annual fee is payable. However, this will cover the remainder of the current year, plus the whole of the following year. (In this case there will be no entitlement to the back publications prior to the 1st October).
