Membership of the Institute is not open to corporate bodies and is available only to individuals.
There are three grades of active membership:
AFFILIATE - Affiliate membership is open to anyone having an interest in Traffic Accident Investigation, it is not restricted to any particular discipline. Affiliate membership may not be used as a qualification.
ASSOCIATE - This grade will permit the individual to use the title 'Associate of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators', and the letters AITAI.
FULL MEMBER - A full member of the Institute will be permitted to use the letters MITAI.
The Institute will accept direct membership applications to the various grades. Membership status will be granted subject to the criteria set out below and agreement of the Council of Management via the Grades Assessment Team.
A full member of the Institute will be permitted to use the letters MITAI. A new grade of 'Associate' has been introduced. This grade will permit the individual to use the title 'Associate of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators', and the letters AITAI.
The Grades Assessment Team may vary the application criteria, where, in exceptional instances, it is appropriate to accommodate the vagaries of individual applicant's circumstances.
COUNCIL TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EMPHASISE THAT AFFILIATE MEMBER STATUS IS NOT A QUALIFICATION AND REFERENCE TO IT IN ANY DOCUMENT OR ADVERTISING REMAINS A BREACH OF INSTITUTE RULES
The Institute offers Retired Member Status:
RETIRED STATUS - For those members wishing to receive copies of Contact and Impact the annual fee will be £20.00. This level will also entitle the member to the discounted rates offered to Institute members at events.
The following table outlines the requirements for membership and more details are shown
Guidelines and additional information
- An interest in road traffic accident Investigation and reconstruction. It is expected that ITAI members will have an interest in the subjects encompassed within the field of road traffic accident investigation and reconstruction.
- Be of good repute. Members are expected to be of good repute, consistent with the principle of the Institute motto 'honestas et integritas' or Honesty and Integrity.
- Applicants may apply direct to all levels of membership. Applications may be made direct to any grade of membership. However, where an assessment is involved and it is considered the applicant does not achieve the requirements of that level, they will be recommended for another grade of membership. Feedback of the traits required to achieve a higher grade will be provided. Re-application would not usually be accepted less than 12 months from completion of the initial assessment.
- Membership grade recognised externally. Full ITAI membership may use the letters MITAI.
Associate ITAI members may use the letters AMITAI in recognition of their current membership of ITAI.
Affiliate members will not use or refer to their membership in documents, adverts or otherwise
- Complaints & Discipline. Successful applicants at all levels of ITAI membership will be subject to the Institute rules, including any complaints system which may be applied.
- Advertise Application. Every applicant's name will be published in the Institute magazine Contact. There will be a 28 day period, from publication of Contact, to allow any written observations or objections to be made by current members in respect of the applicant. In due course this may also be advertised on the Institute website within the 'members only' area. Whilst the advert may appear on the website sooner than the date of publication of Contact, the expiry period will be the same for both media.
- Sponsors or Referees. Applicants will be required to provide two people who regularly see the applicant's work, either on a professional basis or as a user of the applicant's services. At least one of these people MUST be a full ITAI member.
- Practical Skills. It is assumed an applicant to 'full' or associate' member will have had some training prior to the commencement of their practical skills period. Accident Investigation and Reconstruction can include a broad spectrum of skills and discipline. It will be for the applicant to demonstrate the relevance of their practical skills.
Demonstrating practical skills must be relevant and current to the application. To be valid and current, at least ONE month of this period must be within the previous 12 months for Affiliate level and THREE months within the previous 12 months for Full member applications.
- Qualifications. ITAI encourages applications from diverse disciplines. It is therefore impractical to specify what is or is not a relevant qualification. It is for the Applicant to demonstrate the relevance of qualifications in instances where relevance may be in question.
The current Full ITAI qualifications level is approximated to City & Guilds Level III or NVQ level 4 or above.
A copy of relevant certificates in support of qualifications endorsed by one of the sponsors or referees are required.
- CPD. Should be relevant to the Applicant's current role and relevant to road traffic accident investigation and reconstruction. A minimum of 18 hours per calendar year is required. Two years of CPD is required when applying to Associate or Full membership. CPD is encouraged but is not a requirement for Affiliate members. For CPD to be assessed, it should readily identify the relevant activity, relevance of that activity to the discipline and the manner of professional development gained by the applicant.
- Reports / Papers for assessment. Applicants will be asked to provide brief details of 10 reports/papers/incidents from which 2 files will be selected. These are a means for the Applicant to demonstrate their investigative and reconstruction skills. Typically these files will be not more than 3 years old. Applicable for Associate grade only, if files/reports/incidents are not available, an extended essay to demonstrate investigative and/or reconstruction skills may be acceptable
- 2500 word essay. This is a not intended to be a précis of the submitted assessment files. This is an opportunity to expand upon these files, such as work undertaken but otherwise excluded from the files, details of problems encountered and solved, expansion of aspects considered of interest by the applicant. This encompasses both submitted files within one essay. Applicable for Associate grade only, if files/reports/incidents are not available or of limited diversity, an extended essay to demonstrate investigative and/or reconstruction skills may be acceptable.
- Assessors. Applications to associate or full ITAI membership will be subject to assessment. An appeals system will apply with the final decision being made by the Council of Management where appropriate.
- Licentiateship of the City and Guilds of London Institute (LCGI). Applicants who already hold the relevant City & Guilds Certificates may, on successful application to Full MITAI status, apply for Licentiateship.
- Other memberships or associations. Membership of ITAI is for individuals, and there is no corporate grade. Membership of any other Institute, Society or similar body does not exempt a member from having to fulfil the requirements of the ITAI application system.
- Lapse of annual membership fee payment. Institute rules provide that fees are payable annually on the 1st January. Late payment or failing to pay fees within any time scale expected from time to time will result in the loss of recognition of an applicant's membership to ITAI. Re-instatement will usually be at the discretion of the Council. A lapse of membership will void any ongoing application process
- Lapse of membership. Where 'full' or 'associate' membership fees lapse between 1st January to the following 1st January, the membership grade will become lapsed. Where a lapsed member applies to rejoin ITAI, a full application process will be required.
- RETIRED STATUS - For those members wishing to receive copies of Contact and Impact the annual fee will be £20.00. This level will also entitle the member to the discounted rates offered to Institute members at events.
- Administration. Membership to affiliate grade is expected to be completed within approximately 4 weeks from receipt of the application form. Applicants for Associate and Full membership are expected to be able to proceed at the time of application (Sufficient CPD, papers, reports etc). These applications are typically completed within about three months. Where the process extends to six months or more, a review may be required by the Grades Assessment Team. Unnecessary delays caused by the applicant may be a factor for a failed application.
- Appeals. Appeals on the final decisions made in respect of applications may be made in writing through the Grades Assessment Team, who may take reasonable actions to resolve the issues. All appeals will be notified to Council of Management by Secretary to the Grades Assessment Team. Where the Grades Assessment Team are unable to resolve an appeal, such appeal will be put before Council of Management for consideration and whose decision is final. All appeals considered by Council will be in writing. At the discretion of the Council of Management appeals may be made in person, however costs incurred would not normally be met by the Institute.
